In the fullness of the night, God sat in our midst but we did not know Him.
We sat around the fire, keeping our hands and faces warm.
Then God's voice pierced the silence asking:
Tell Me dear friends, what say you of life?
Then a woman, a prostitute who was seated with us said:
Life is having a family, a husband and children to care for...
That is life.
She turned away in tears, gazing into the fire.
Another woman, a nun, came saying:
Life is desiring a man and making love to him through the Night.
And her eyes were fixed upon the prostitute.
And yet another woman, a mother who held a crippled child in her arms, came saying:
Life is that love which heals us in our sorrow and turns sacrifice into need.
Her eyes stared at the earth.
Now a merchant spoke his mind with eyes turned inward:
Life is being not anxious over the morrow and desiring only the peace of the heart.
Then a sage said with eyes fixed upon the night sky:
Life is awakening to the Rhythm that lies in this human breast.
After listening to these replies, silence filled the air once more.
Then God smiled in the midst of our joy and sorrow and He said:
Life is sitting here with you, talking.
