I was walking one morning in the marketplace.
Crowds gathered and huddled around every merchant and his goods.
And as I walked, as if in a trance, a man's eyes caught Mine.
He was a religious man, for he wore a symbol around his neck.
He halted his steps and with fear in his eyes, he opened his mouth and let
out a shriek of terror.
He ran through the crowds, stumbling and falling, looking back
as if some demon was chasing after him.

Then a woman of no religion came and stood before Me.
She looked deeply into My eyes and embraced Me in weeping.

Now the other man came back behind a wall of men, pointing at Me and saying:
It is Him; He has a demon in His eyes.
And his pointing finger trembled in My face.

Then the woman of no religion looked into My eyes once more,
She laughed and addressed the other stranger:
Man, it is only you with your religious garments laid aside.

After that day, no religious man or woman dared to look into My eyes.

Reflections

Those who embrace their fear take leave of religion to find God.
